The Wild is a defensive juggernaut these days as it returns to Minnesota for a season-long five-game homestand.
The latest shutdown came in Pittsburgh during a 2-1 shootout win over the Penguins on Tuesday night. The Wild has surrendered 31 goals in 16 games (1.94 a game).
"They've got two of the top five players in the world," said defenseman Kim Johnsson, who played 29 minutes, 56 seconds, referring to Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby. "When you play well against them, you feel good. As a whole team, we played really strong against them. We gave them no time with the puck."
The problem is, the Wild can't score.

Wild activate RW Owen Nolan

The Minnesota Wild activated right wing Owen Nolan from injured reserve on Thursday. Nolan missed eight of the last 11 games with a leg injury. He has one goal and three assists in five games this season. To make room for Nolan, the Wild sent center Krys Kolanos to their AHL affiliate in Houston. Kolanos scored one goal in two games while filling in for Nolan.

Niklas Backstrom made sure Minnesota held off Colorado. Backstrom made 35 saves and Pierre-Marc Bouchard and Benoit Pouliot scored goals in the first 7:44 to help the Wild beat the Avalanche 3-1 on Thursday night. Andrew Brunette scored his fifth goal and Marek Zidlicky had two assists for Minnesota. The Wild have won two of their last three games.

Injured Burns sent back home for rest, treatment

Minnesota Wild defenseman Brent Burns is returning home early from the team's road trip due to an unspecified upper-body injury that has kept him out of action for the past week. Burns was hurt in pregame warmups on Saturday at Phoenix and didn't dress for Tuesday's game at San Jose. He'll miss games at Colorado Thursday and Vancouver Saturday.
