Mason to backstop rookies in NHL YoungStars game

Rookie goalie Steve Mason has shown the Columbus Blue Jackets that he is ready for the NHL. Now he has a chance to prove it on a much bigger stage. Mason has taken the Blue Jackets' starting job away from injured Pascal Leclaire and run with it. In his first 23 games this season, Mason went 13-9-1 with five shutouts and posted a stellar 1.82 goals-against average.

The Panthers won their second straight game Thursday and picked up two points on a team they are chasing in the standings. It was a game coach Pete DeBoer and his players were bound and determined to win.
The Panthers haven't had much success against the Hurricanes in the past, but have now won two of four against Carolina and are trying to pull past them and take second place in the Southeast Division.
The Panthers will now play seven straight games in Florida, with only two trips—and two extended breaks—scheduled for the month of January. The Panthers entertain Atlanta on Saturday afternoon, then don't play again until the following Friday.
