How does the NFL decide where the Super Bowl will be?
The NFL chooses the locations for future Super Bowl games 3 to 5 years in advance. Cities compete for the game in a process similar to those used by the World Cup and the Olympic Games. In
order to host a Super Bowl, cities must meet these qualifications:
- 70,000+ seat venue
- February average high temperature of at least 50 degrees
- Separate practice facilities for both teams
- 600,000 square feet of exhibit space for fan-related events
- Large, luxury hotel for the NFL and teams
- Quality hotel rooms for 35% of the venue's capacity within a one-hour drive
- 50,000 square feet of space for media, aka "Radio Row"
- Room for 40 television trucks and 10 photo trailers
- 250 buses for use by the NFL
- 3 golf courses for use by the NFL for their annual charity golf tournament
The NFL has made some exceptions in the past, most recently for Detroit because they had a covered stadium.
The team designated as the "home team" alternates yearly between the NFC and the AFC. The NFC holds the title on the odd-numbered years, and the AFC on the even-numbered years. The home team
also gets to choose between wearing their colored jerseys or their white jerseys.
