"If every player were a medical doctor that could recognize symptoms of concussions, then that would be a great idea," NFLPA assistant executive director George...

(Fri, 20 Nov 2009 00:18:08 PST)
Hunter Smith is getting a lot of attention for a punter. First, his position coach claimed with a straight face during training camp that Smith might be the best holder in the history of the NFL. Then Smith showed up at practice one day wearing strange, seamless burgundy and gold shoes, a can't-miss moment for TV cameras.
Redskins Team Report
(Thu, 19 Nov 2009 19:06:53 PST)
The Redskins are 3-6 after nine games in 2009, compared to 6-3 at the same point last year, but don't blame the pass defense.
Washington leads the league in that category and it's not because of the secondary, which surrendered three touchdown catches of at least 40 yards the past three games.
Credit a much-enhanced pass rush which is feeling the effects of luring All-Pro tackle Albert Haynesworth from Tennessee with a seven-year, $100 million contract ($41 million guaranteed) in February and drafting Texas All-American Brian Orakpo with the 13th selection overall in April. Just nine games into 2009, the Redskins have equaled their 24 sacks for all of 2008 and are on pace for 45, which would match their highest number since their last Super Bowl team, back in...

With Portis out, Betts is Redskins' top back
(Wed, 18 Nov 2009 16:53:46 PST)
Clinton Portis can take his time coming back from his concussion. "El Boogie" has everything under control. El Boogie? That's a nickname Ladell Betts has had since high school. It's a play on his initials, but he doesn't remember who gave it to him. A flashier running back might have found a way to market it -- maybe a Web site or T-shirts -- but that's not Betts' style.
