Orton misses Broncos practice; backup Simms gets first-team reps again

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - Kyle Orton missed a third consecutive practice Friday because of a sprained left ankle and has only an outside chance of playing Sunday when the Denver Broncos and San Diego Chargers meet with first place in the AFC West on the line.

Say, didn't you used to be the high-flying Denver Broncos?
That's the Chargers' question as they head to Denver to face their longtime AFC West foe Sunday.
It wasn't that long ago—Oct. 19—that the Broncos left San Diego after taking the Chargers to the woodshed and building a 3 1/2-game lead.
The Broncos haven't won a game since and the Chargers are riding a four-game winning streak to knot these two talented teams at 6-3 and atop the AFC West.
"I don't think 'tank' is the word," Philip Rivers said, when asked if this Broncos team is tanking like last year's, which squandered away the division lead to San Diego in the last four weeks.
"Teams go through ups and downs; we went through a downer earlier in the year and now we're winning.
Hardwick still not ready to return to Chargers

San Diego Chargers center Nick Hardwick will not play against the Broncos on Sunday in the showdown between AFC West leaders in Denver. Hardwick, out since having ankle surgery following the season opener, missed practice on Thursday. The former Pro Bowler returned to practice four weeks ago but he hasn't practiced since a setback last Wednesday.

The calendar hadn't even gotten to Halloween and the San Diego Chargers already had been knocked 3 1/2 games behind the Denver Broncos in the AFC West.
