GEORGIA BULLDOGS INFORMATION
One hundred thirteen years ago, 24-year old University of Georgia chemistry professor Dr. Charles Herty made the first introduction of the sport of football to his alma mater. He had become fascinated with the game as a graduate student at Johns Hopkins. When he returned to the University as a member of the faculty in the Fall of 1891, Herty walked out across an old field where students often participated in unorganized recreation. The field rested in a quadrangle bordered by campus buildings, most specifically New College on one side and Moore College on one end, with the Chapel on a corner. He was remembered as having walked onto the field carrying a Walter Camp rulebook which devoted itself to this new style of rugby commonly called "football."
He told the students about the game he had seen in the East. He helped them prepare a field on this quadrangle which would be named for Dr. Herty only a few days later.
Over the next few months a great tradition was born. On January 25, 1892, Georgia played Mercer College on Herty Field. Then, through the friendship of Herty and Johns Hopkins classmate Dr. George Petrie, who was a faculty member at Auburn, a game was played on Feb. 20 between the two schools at Atlanta's Piedmont Park, marking the inaugural game of what became the South's oldest collegiate rivalry. Football in the South had begun.
In the years that followed, Georgia attracted some of the most successful coaches in the history of the game -Warner,Cunningham, Stegeman, Woodruff, Mehre, Butts, and Dooley. Many of college football's greatest players came to Athens to wear the red and black- McWhorter, Smith, Maffett, Hartman, Sinkwich, Rauch, Trippi, Tarkenton, Stanfill, Butler, Walker, Hoage, Hearst, Zeier, Greene, Pollack and many, many more.
Over the past century, Georgia teams have won 679 games, been to more different bowl games than any team in America (18), earned the sixth-most bowl invitations in the history of college football (40), made 227 television appearances (since 1959), been recognized as national champions five times (1927,'42,'46,'68, and 1980), won 11 Southeastern Conference titles, boasted two Heisman Trophy winners, two Maxwell Award winners and one Outland Award winner, and has resting in the center of campus perhaps the most impressive monument to its heritage - Sanford Stadium.
Tradition is defined as "the handing down of beliefs, legends, and customs from generation to generation." In the last 100-plus years, Georgia has built a tradition that is a standard in college football. Hundreds of young men of great character have accepted the challenge to come to Athens and earn a part of the great tradition that is Georgia Football.
