There was a time when the sight of Tayshaun Prince and the Pistons stalking the floor at Philips Arena struck fear in the hearts of Hawks fans.
That seems like a lifetime ago now that the Hawks and Pistons have traded places on the Eastern Conference food chain.
No longer road kill for the East's elite, the Hawks have now surpassed former powers like the Pistons.
"The funny thing is we used the Pistons model, really, in terms of how we built this team," said Hawks coach Mike Woodson, who coached on Larry Brown's staff in Detroit before taking over as the Hawks' head coach six years ago. The Atlanta Hawks followed through with their plan to jump on the Detroit Pistons early. The surprise was after the Hawks led by 28 points in the second quarter, they had to jump on the Pistons again late. Joe Johnson scored 26 points and the Hawks had their best shooting game of the season but still had to hold off Detroit's late comeback to beat the Pistons 112-99 on Saturday night.
