Baseball World Series Info
Babe Ruth calling his shot. Reggie Jackson going back-to-back-to-back. Carlton Fisk slamming a home run in the 12th to give Boston the sixth game. All of these memorable moments have made the experience
of the World Series what it is today.
The World Series was first played over one hundred years ago in 1903. A best-of-nine series between the older National League and the American League, the AL's Boston Pilgrims beat the Pittsburgh Pirates
5 games to 3. But the following year NL champions the New York Giants refused to play Boston, and no series was played. Luckily, the league presidents manage to work out their differences, and in 1905
Philadelphia and the Giants faced off in a best-of-seven series with the Giants emerging as the winners. From then on, with the exception of 1919 - 1921, the series has followed the best-of-seven format.
And the rest is history. This year's road to the World Series will be an interesting one, as the Boston Red Sox try to hold onto their title of world champions after winning their first series since 1918.
However, the newbies of the National League, the Washington Nationals, are coming out strong and have their eyes on the prize. No doubt will the 2005 season prove to be very exciting.
