Conducted by the United States Golf Association and held at the Newport Golf and Country Club, the 36-hole competition included 10 professionals and one amateur who made 4 trips around the 9-hole Newport course in one day. The surprise winner was a 21-year old English professional named Horace Rawlins, who was also the assistant at the host course.Amateurs and British golf professionals dominated the first decade of U.S. Open Championships, but as American players started to take over the event started growing into a major world golf championship. Then with the emergence of some spectacular amateurs such as Francis Ouimet and Bobby Jones, the popularity of the competition started to surge. Soon after came the players who were notorious for their stunning comebacks, impressive determination and amazing talent, including Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Ben Hogan. Surviving the rigorous test that is the U.S. Open, all players past and present have made the event the exciting championship that it is today. |
