Nine Inch Nails Information

Michael Trent Reznor was born in Mercer, PA; he often went by his middle name to avoid the mix-up with his father Michael Sr. At the age of five Michael took an interest and began playing the piano, studying
classical music, and later on learned tenor sax and tuba in his school band; he also acted in several musicals as well. After spending one year studying music and computers at Allegheny College, Michael
dropped out to pursue his music. Michael moved to Cleveland with a friend from high school. Within this time, he was exposed to new wave and a whole new world in underground music; he was spellbound with the
sounds, and the powerful way musicians were using electronic instruments.
At 19 years old, he auditioned and joined an AOR band called the Innocent, which released one album titled, Livin' in the Streets. He quit the band after only three months and wound up playing with local
bands in and around town. Michael started working in a keyboard store and as a janitor in the local Right Track recording studio. There after Michael became a studio engineer, all the while teaching himself
assorted computer applications and working on his own material after hours. In 1987, Michael appeared in a film called Light of Day, where he played keyboards.
In 1988 Michael began recording playing all the instruments himself. At first, he only wanted to release a single on a any small European label, but after he sent demo tapes around to ten American labels,
nearly every label offered him a deal. Michael went with TVT, they released Nine Inch Nails debut album, Titled "Pretty Hate Machine", in 1989. Michael put together a backing band and toured with Skinny Puppy
for a brief while, but grew tired of playing for strictly industrial artists. With an ensemble band featuring Chris Vrenna on drums, Richard Patrick on guitar and several different keyboardists, he
consciously chose to open for alt-rock acts partly for the opportunity to win over fans who might not have liked industrial music. His strategy aided in the explanation of Nine Inch Nails fan base. Nine Inch
Nails single "Down in It" got airplay in clubs, reaching Billboard's dance and modern rock charts. MTV picked up on the video for the more rock-oriented "Head Like a Hole." Michael chose James Woolley
keyboardist in 1991. Nine Inch Nails became part of the opening Lollapalooza tour, which expanded their fan base beyond their wildest dreams. "Pretty Hate Machine" spent over two years on the album charts and
eventually sold over a million copies -- one of the very first indie-label rock albums to do so.
Nine Inch Nails is the most popular industrial group ever to hit the seen. The group is largely responsible for bringing the music to a wide audience of music appreciators. It isn't really accurate to call
Nine Inch Nails a group; the only official member is singer/producer/multi-instrumentalist the talented Michael Trent Reznor, who remained solely responsible for the musical direction of Nine Inch Nails.
Michael wrote structured songs where lyrics were on point with the concept of the song. With Michael's basic instincts and ear for music he was able to compose and tame the ruthlessness of electronic beats.
Michael's five-year hiatus ended and he was still well-liked to many fans but his commercial momentum had slowed down.
Nine Inch Nails returned back on the charts in 1999 with the double-CD opus "The Fragile". By the way it debuted at number one, with a massive first-week in sales, but slipped down the charts rather quickly
afterwards. The musical climate had changed a lot over the past five years. One year later Nine Inch Nails dropped the remix album "Things Falling Apart", and took off on an extensive world tour.
